In this dynamic Outdoor Survival Skills class, students will learn essential techniques to thrive in the great outdoors. Led by experienced wilderness instructor Mark Thompson, participants will gain hands-on experience in vital survival skills, including shelter building, fire making, and navigation. This class is designed for kids aged 11-13 who are eager to explore the outdoors while developing confidence and resilience.

The Outdoor Survival Skills class invites students to immerse themselves in the exciting world of wilderness survival. Throughout this engaging course, participants will learn critical skills that will prepare them for outdoor adventures and instill a sense of responsibility for their safety in nature. The class will combine theoretical lessons with practical exercises, allowing students to practice and refine their skills in real-world scenarios.

The curriculum will cover:

  • Shelter Building: Students will learn various methods to construct shelters using natural materials, ensuring they understand how to create safe and effective protection from the elements.

  • Fire Making Techniques: Participants will practice different fire-starting methods, including using flint and steel, friction techniques, and fire safety protocols, enabling them to build and maintain a fire for warmth and cooking.

  • Navigation Skills: The class will introduce students to map reading and compass skills, teaching them how to navigate effectively in the wilderness without relying solely on technology.

  • First Aid Basics: Students will learn essential first aid techniques to handle common outdoor injuries, promoting safety and preparedness in the field.
